08:27 - Humbled Again

I went to a different dojo for iaido last night; an old friend of my teacher who studied together under that same sensei way back in the day. This other sensei is slightly younger than my sensei. Normal class is just me and my teacher, this class had about 5 adults and 2 children all freely practicing. 2 of the adults were at least 5th dan (degree black belt) and had like 20 years of practice under them. It was humbling to say the least. I am 10 year or more younger, stronger, more fit in body yet I felt like a drunk swinging a barstool as I practiced through the kata.

I got the feeling if these 2 guys wanted to just cut one eyelash from my head they could do it without thought or effort. As an added bonus I got to see a lot more of the next level of kata (the ones I haven't been taught yet) and it looks cool, cool, cool. The entry levels aren't showy or complicated (at least in the range of motion, the complication is the fight to make your mind, the sword, and your body move together); the next level has many more small and big movements and seems much more vicious. I was particularly impressed with the number of times non-sword attacks were used by the way of massive stomps on your enemy before the final slash or stab. I suspect these stomps would used to stun/immobilize your foe to make it easier to lacerate them to the next world. On a side note the sword I bought is just plain heavy now. I think down the road a bit more I will have to invest in another tool simply because my sword is nearly 2x what the normal person uses. On the plus side nothing feels heavy in my hands any more.

After class I went to play kendo with the adults at the high school. A lot of people showed up for some reason. With the exception of me and 3 other students (JrH/HS) everyone was again 5th dan or higher. I only got to practice with the HS kids. Excellent.

Forearms must be getting strong with all that heavy sword work. Great. Not only will you win all the backgammon games, but you'll be winning soggy biscuit as well.
Damn, what can I beat you at? Think of a challange!
