I wished I had brought my camera. The power gilders (parachutes where the guy falling has a big fan strapped to his back for power) might be called something else, but I think you can get the picture. They were pretty cool. Watching the guys land (there were about 5 of them) was pretty entertaining too. One was pretty graceful the rest did face plants when hit old mother earth.
They were nice, but the real reason I write now is suggested by the title. A serious thing too that is. Most have heard my opinion that Japanese can't drive, I always thought people from Boston or Chicago couldn't drive (so I've heard). The Japanese shouldn't have cars, but that's really not what I wanted to point out here. What the Japanese shouldn't have is pets. Dogs that are too big for houses (in otherwords anything larger than a dachshund) are kept in solitary on a length of chain typically no longer than 2 meters outside their owners houses until they die. I have seen every manner of atrocity commited against dogs and I believe that most westerners would cringe, no, shed tears maybe; if they saw the state of animal care in this place. I have seen owners take their dogs for walks using their cars and their mopeds. Bikes I can understand, but the rest is just dangerous and lazy. Thanks to this loving attention to their pets nearly any animal you see is completely outside of control and is too dangerous to ever touch.
Today I saw at the beach a man bring his spaniel down to the ocean and he, the dog and his daughter played for an hour. Meanwhile another man slowly made his way out of the city towards the beach and for what reason I can only guess decided to go to the same part of the beach the other man was letting his dog loose. Of course the spaniel wanted to see the other dog and of course this other dog was just as undiciplined as the spaniel so starting with some chasing and turning. Then finally kicking, screaming and stone throwing the two men nearly got into a fist fight about their animals. The noramally sedate and passive Japanese men became aggressive and ugly and as dumb as the two animals which they were pulled.
I think my real paper journal I will have to devote a page to the passive/aggressive nature of the inhabitants of this too small island and the things they might be best with out.
Thank you,
(diclaimer-this opinion is hardly researched and I can only speak from my experiences. What I see with my eyes. Perhaps there are some that have wonderful pets and have a heart large enough to devote the time to a pet like time to a child, so take what I wrote with a grain of salt.)
