10:41 - A Flower in each Hand - My Trip to Kyoto

Yesterday I headed up to Kyoto with Fumie a friend that works at the old folks home in a neighboring town. We caught the express out of Gobo and set out straight away to Kyoto the 'old' town of Japan. With most any traditional Japanese idea you want it will take many many more trips to the area in order to feel satisfied. I did see a few of the more obvious highlights though and I think it was a good, but long day. Here are the shots that I thought were worth keeping.

Here I am the luckiest guy around. We rented bikes for the day so it made traveling around the city amazingly convienent. We did manage to wander aroundGion which is the geisha district in Kyoto. These two women are suppose to be maiko (they aren't really, but it's too hard to explain why). Maiko are apprentice geisha. They are much more elaborate and have many more intricate baubles in their hair and clothes. Full geisha I think are less ornate because they have to work where as the maiko's I think just are learning and the costumes are something they need to be mindful of. Always graceful always good at fullfilling the needs of client. I heard an hour with a geisha can cost 500$ or more.

This is a close up of the two girls. She is almost showing her teeth :) This girl also spoke English pretty well, at least her accnent seemed like she did. The more I look at the picture the more stunning she becomes.

The two girls walking away. If you look close you'll see
right below their necks there is no makeup (on their backs there is)
This is another difference between maiko and full geisha.
Me, I was over come with the urge to touch the bare flesh. It beckoned to me
as powerfully as mexican food does.

Just for grins a shot of a crane on top of a temple.

thanks,
